10 Things to Do in Cape Town for Under R200

Cape Town is arguably the best city on earth, and for many reasons. One of them is that you can have a blast with a massive budget, but also with a tight budget! You don’t need to be ballin’ to enjoy the Mother City. Here are 10 things to do in Cape Town for under R200.

1. Get ice cream and walk on the Sea Point promenade

We all scream for ice cream, especially from the Creamery in Mouille Point. Grab a scoop of your favourite indulgent flavour, and go for a stroll – sunset is a particularly glorious time for a walk on the prom!

Cost: From R47 per scoop

2. Take the train to Kalk Bay

The best way to experience a city is to do as the locals do. Jump on the public train for a day in Kalk Bay, a beautiful fishing village with gorgeous views and quirky shops. Depending on where you get on, the journey may take up to about an hour, but it’s so worth it.

Cost: Depending on departure location, average R27 return trip from Cape Town CBD

3. Watch a movie under the stars at the Galileo Open Air Cinema

Grab your favourite picnic snacks, a blanket and your bestie for the perfect night out! From the old classics to new releases, everyone will find something to watch. There are a variety of venues which operate throughout the week. Stay up to date with upcoming shows by following them on Facebook.

4. Watch a performance at the Open Air Maynardville Theatre

Enjoy a night of theatre and music at a magical show at Maynardville in Wynberg. From opera to ballet to orchestras, you’re sure to get your culture fix. Have a look at the upcoming events here. Only open during summer.

5. Sightsee the harbour from the water

You might have gone on the famous “Red Bus” before, but have you done the “Red Boat”? Cape Town City Sightseeing also offers harbour cruises that offer lovely mountain views. You’ll also spot some seals!

Cost: From R75

6. Quench your thirst with a beer tasting

There’s no shortage of amazing craft breweries in Cape Town. Why not explore one you haven’t been to before, and do a tasting for the full experience? We love Aegir Project in Noordhoek.

Cost: R80

7. Who’s up for putt-putt in Mouille Point?

This is a firm family favourite for Sunday afternoons! Make sure to lather on the sun cream as the whole family tries their hands at mini-golf, with the friendly backdrop of Lion’s Head and the sea.

Cost: R44 per person

8. Squeak some tekkie at a silent disco

Ever wondered what it would feel like to party to your own beat? Silent discos are all the fun, minus the noise pollution. Get ready to shake your boo-tay! Check out upcoming silent events here.

Cost: Depends on event, R175 average

9. Watch the Duck Parade at Vergenoegd Wine Estate

Every day hundreds upon hundreds of Indian runner ducks parade out to the vineyards at Vergenoegd in Somerset West to keep the pests in check and the grapes pesticide-free. It’s an adorable sight to behold as they waddle to “work”! It’s a lovely farm to enjoy a glass of wine at afterwards. They parade between 8am and 10am or between 11am and 1pm. Phone ahead to confirm.

Cost: Free, tastings from R75

10. Visit the penguins at Boulders Beach

Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town is one of the most beautiful beaches in the city with its clear blue waters and resident penguins. Take your beach umbrella and make a day of it! Remember that Boulders is a nature reserve and visitors may not touch or interfere with the penguins in any way.
